Quote from ‘A Planet to Win – Why We Need a Green New Deal’

The Green New Deal burst onto the political stage when organizers held a sit-in in the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) last fall.  She dismissed the idea as a “Green Dream, or whatever,” but organizers were unfazed.  They shot back that the Green New Deal was indeed a dream, a badly needed one about what organized and focused people are capable of accomplishing in the face of a crisis that threatens the habitability of our home.  Given how radically and rapidly our societies need to change if we are to avert full-blown climate catastrophe (and given the prevalence of ecological doom and despair), sharing some big dreams about a future in which we do not descend into climate barbarism seemed like a very good place to start. – Excerpt by Naomi Klein in the book’s ‘Forward’ page.

  1. Hi, just wanted to share a quote from a book I recently read.
    […]
If this is the actual reality for many, if not most, parents today, then facing up to our own part in causing climate change is going to be a momentous task. Each of us is on a treadmill of work and family which is very hard if not impossible to step off. We choose the path of least disruption even when the science whos that this path makes us at least partly culpable for compromising the very future we want to create for our children. It is hard to acknowledge that by virtue of living and working in the societies we are part of, we hold a certain amount of responsibility for what is happening. At a minimum we elect the leaders, we give legitimacy to their decisions. We all continue to live our lives pumping out the gases which are causing climate change. It is a problem that leads to a Pandora’s box which few want to open or a buried sense of guilt which nobody wants to face. – Excerpt from ‘Climate Generation’ by Lorna Gold (Subtitle: Awakening to Our Children’s Future), pg 97.
