Prince Charles tells G7 leaders to tackle climate change like the pandemic

In an address to the Group of Seven (G7) nations on Friday, Britain’s Prince Charles urged the leaders to tackle climate change like they did the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charles was speaking ahead of a reception hosted by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, for the G7 and European Union leaders, their partners and guest nations at the Eden Project – the world’s largest indoor rainforest – in Cornwall, England.

“Climate change and biodiversity loss represent a borderless crisis, the solutions to which have been argued about and postponed for far too long,” Charles said. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are doing it for the pandemic, so if you don’t mind me saying so, we must also do it for the planet.”

Development campaigners said on Friday that G7 leaders will jeopardize the chance of success at a landmark global climate change summit later this year if they fail to honour past aid promises this weekend during the three-day summit.

Presidents and prime ministers from the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and hosts Britain kicked off a three-day summit in southwestern England on Friday with progress on how to slow global warming at the top of the agenda. But advocacy groups said G7 and other rich nations had to deliver on a promise of $100 billion a year in financing to help poor countries overhaul their economies and adapt to the impacts of climate change, or risk failure at November’s climate summit.
