Though I may not be a master of Rumba, I can sustain a steady Latin rhythm for nearly an hour—a feat appreciated by aficionados of Quintero’s music.
Amid the joy of our shared culture, I am compelled to confront a disheartening reality. It pains me to see fellow Latinas and Latinos considering support for individuals who have repeatedly shown blatant disregard for our heritage. I recall the sorrow in my father’s eyes when a certain president, during his visit, tossed paper towels at us. With tears, he said, “toma pa’ que jodan“—a poignant testament to the indignity inflicted upon us.
Let us not forget the anguish of having our children torn from our embrace, confined in cages as if they were animals—a trauma that continues as families struggle to reunite, sometimes without success. Despite my imperfect Spanish, I understand that the essence of our culture lies not just in language proficiency but in the depth of our collective spirit, where passion transcends skill.
Therefore, I urge you, my dear compatriots, to reconsider supporting those who fail to grasp the richness of our culture and who perpetuate divisive rhetoric and unjust labels. Let us honor the countless Latinas and Latinos whose contributions have shaped innovations and institutions worldwide, recognizing that our cultural tapestry enriches humanity beyond measure.
As my parents often reflected on the symbiotic relationship between African American and Latinx communities, we acknowledge that our combined contributions form the fabric of societal progress. To turn a blind eye to the systemic injustices endured by our communities is to forsake our shared heritage and jeopardize the future of generations to come.
I do not presume to dictate your voting choices, but I implore you to consider the wisdom of our collective experiences. While forgiveness is a hallmark of our character, let us not forget the injustices we have faced. Let us exercise our agency with foresight, safeguarding not only our interests but also the well-being of our children and Latinx siblings worldwide.
For every ballot cast in favor of principled leadership, we sow the seeds of change, fostering ripples that transcend borders and empower the marginalized. Our choices today shape the trajectory of a world grappling with the urgent realities of the Climate Emergency.

Al dirigirme a ustedes hoy, reflexiono profundamente sobre una parte integral de mi identidad: un Rumbero del Clima. Este término, cercano a mi corazón, encarna no solo el ritmo del tambor sino un legado de resiliencia y vitalidad cultural arraigado en nuestra herencia. Aunque no soy un maestro de la rumba, puedo mantener un ritmo latino constante durante casi una hora, una hazaña apreciada por los aficionados a la música de Quintero.
En medio de la alegría de nuestra cultura compartida, me veo obligado a enfrentar una realidad desalentadora. Me duele ver a Latinas y Latinos considerando apoyar a individuos que repetidamente han mostrado un desprecio flagrante por nuestra herencia. Recuerdo la tristeza en los ojos de mi padre cuando cierto presidente, durante su visita, nos lanzó rollos de papel toalla. Con lágrimas, dijo: “toma pa’ que jodan“—un testimonio conmovedor de la indignidad que nos infligieron.
No olvidemos la angustia de tener a nuestros hijos arrancados de nuestros brazos, confinados en jaulas como si fueran animales—un trauma que continúa mientras las familias luchan por reunirse, a veces sin éxito. A pesar de mi español imperfecto, entiendo que la esencia de nuestra cultura no reside solo en la fluidez del idioma sino en la profundidad de nuestro espíritu colectivo, donde la pasión trasciende la habilidad.
Por lo tanto, les insto, queridos compatriotas, a reconsiderar el apoyo a quienes no comprenden la riqueza de nuestra cultura y que perpetúan una retórica divisiva y etiquetas injustas. Honremos a las innumerables Latinas y Latinos cuyas contribuciones han moldeado innovaciones e instituciones en todo el mundo, reconociendo que nuestro tapiz cultural enriquece a la humanidad más allá de toda medida.
