The Power of Unity: Salsa, Culture, and the Rhythm of Giving

Unity is a transformative force. It is one of the deepest powers human beings possess, because when people come together with a shared purpose, something greater than the individual begins to move. A single voice can inspire, but many voices joined together can shake walls, open doors, and awaken entire communities.

That is the spirit behind the song “Unidad” by La Excelencia, performed live at the Barbican Theatre in London, England. This is not just a salsa performance. It is a declaration. It is music with a heartbeat, music with memory, music with a message. From the first strike of the percussion to the rise of the horns, the song reminds us that unity is not a weak idea. Unity is strength in motion.

Salsa has always carried more than rhythm. It carries history. It carries migration, struggle, joy, family, survival, and celebration. It carries the stories of people who crossed borders, built communities, worked hard, raised children, preserved culture, and still found time to dance. In salsa, the drum speaks. The piano answers. The bass walks. The horns call out. The singer tells the story. And the dancers bring that story to life.

That is what makes salsa so powerful. It is never only entertainment. At its best, salsa is a living conversation between generations.

La Excelencia’s music stands in that tradition. Their sound is rooted in salsa dura, the hard-driving, socially aware, percussion-heavy style that brings back the raw spirit of the streets, the barrios, and the dance halls. It is music that does not hide from reality. It celebrates joy while also recognizing hardship. It makes people move, but it also makes people think.

“Unidad,” from the album Mi Tumbao Social, captures that beautifully. The title itself means unity, and the performance feels like a reminder that our power grows when we stop seeing each other as separate and start recognizing ourselves as connected. The song becomes more than a performance; it becomes a call to remember who we are and what we can become together.

Throughout history, unity has helped people overcome challenges that once seemed impossible. Social movements, labor movements, civil rights struggles, community organizing, cultural preservation, scientific breakthroughs, and environmental action have all depended on people choosing cooperation over isolation. No one changes the world alone. Change happens when people decide that their shared future matters more than their private comfort.

Unity does not mean that everyone is the same. In fact, true unity respects difference. It does not erase culture, language, history, or identity. It honors them. Unity is strongest when people bring their full selves to the table: their stories, their wisdom, their pain, their creativity, their music, their food, their faith, their questions, and their dreams.

That is why Latino culture has so much to teach the world about unity. Our communities have often had to survive through family, neighborhood, music, mutual aid, and collective strength. We know what it means to gather, to share, to struggle, to celebrate, and to keep going. We know that culture is not just something we inherit. It is something we give forward.

This morning, I said something that captures that spirit:

“We are not here to take, we’re here to give.”

As a Latino, that quote speaks from a place of dignity, purpose, and responsibility. It challenges the false idea that communities of immigrants, workers, and people of color are here to take from society. The truth is the opposite. We are here to contribute. We are here to build. We are here to care. We are here to create beauty, raise families, strengthen neighborhoods, defend justice, and give our energy to a better world.

That is the deeper meaning of unity. Unity is not about taking power away from others. It is about sharing power in a way that uplifts everyone. It is about recognizing that when one community is respected, all communities become stronger. When one voice is heard, the circle of dignity expands. When one culture is honored, humanity becomes richer.

The performance of “Unidad” reminds us that music can do what speeches sometimes cannot. It can bypass fear. It can reach the body before the mind has time to resist. It can bring strangers into rhythm with one another. In a divided world, that matters. A song can become a bridge. A dance floor can become a classroom. A rhythm can become a reminder that we belong to each other.

And today, that reminder is urgently needed.

We live in a time of climate crisis, ecological emergency, political division, social distrust, and economic pressure. Many people feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure of what difference they can make. But unity tells another story. Unity says that our individual actions matter more when they are connected. Unity says that communities can become resilient when they learn, prepare, organize, and care together. Unity says that hope is not passive. Hope is something we practice collectively.

Whether we are fighting for climate justice, protecting our neighborhoods, defending human rights, preserving culture, or simply trying to become better people, unity remains the foundation. It gives us courage. It gives us direction. It gives us staying power.

La Excelencia’s “Unidad” is a beautiful example of this truth. The song is full of movement, but beneath the movement is meaning. It is joyful, but not shallow. It is energetic, but not empty. It reminds us that salsa can be celebration and resistance at the same time. It can honor the past while pushing us toward a better future.

So when we listen to this performance, let us hear more than the music. Let us hear the ancestors. Let us hear the neighborhoods. Let us hear the workers, the families, the dancers, the dreamers, and the communities that refuse to disappear. Let us hear the message that unity is not just something we talk about. It is something we live.

We are not here to take.

We are here to give.

We are here to build.

We are here to unite.

And when we move together, with rhythm, love, courage, and purpose, there is no limit to what we can create.
