It started in a comment section. A YouTube video was working through the power of deception wielded by the very rich, and someone dropped a line into the comments and kept moving, the way people do:

The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is in keeping them ignorant.

My first instinct was not to share it. My first instinct was to check it. That instinct is the entire reason this series exists, so let me show the work out loud rather than quietly, because the checking is the lesson as much as the quote is.

What the Record Actually Shows

The line is real. The French original reads: Le secret de la liberté est d’éclairer les hommes, comme celui de la tyrannie est de les retenir dans l’ignorance. It dates to November 1792 and is preserved in Oeuvres de Maximilien Robespierre (1840), Volume 2, page 253. French literary archives place it in Lettres à ses commettans, the periodical Robespierre published so he could write directly to the citizens who elected him, over the heads of a hostile press. A man who built his own distribution channel because he did not trust the existing one. That detail alone is worth sitting with in 2026.

Three things the comment got slightly wrong, and each one matters.

The name

It is Maximilien, not Maximillen. Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre, born 6 May 1758, executed 28 July 1794. Five Practices for This Community

1. Verify before you amplify. Ninety seconds. That is what this quote cost me to check, and the check made the post better than the quote alone would have. When you share something unverified because it feels right, you are not fighting the disinformation economy. You are working in it, unpaid.

2. Follow the funding. When a study, an institute, or a confident expert appears in your feed arguing that a climate measure is unaffordable or unnecessary, spend five minutes on who pays for the building. This is not cynicism. It is basic provenance, the same thing I just did with a quote.

3. Learn one law all the way down. Not ten laws at surface level. One, thoroughly. Correct opinion became a loyalty test. The loyalty test became a scaffold.

Climate work is not immune to this failure mode. We are right about the physics. The temptation that comes with being right is to treat every disagreement as bad faith, every hesitation as complicity, and every person who is not yet with us as an obstacle to be removed rather than a neighbor to be reached. That temptation feels like rigor. It is actually the beginning of the same error.

So the discipline is this. Education that liberates stays accountable, welcomes the hard question, admits what it does not know, and keeps treating the unconvinced person as a full human being with reasons of their own. Education that liberates can be audited. Education that has stopped being able to hear an objection is on its way to becoming something else, no matter how good the cause.

The secret of freedom really does lie in enlightening people. Robespierre proved the sentence true and then proved, with his own life, how much more than a sentence it takes.
